CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.-The Duke University wrestling squad opened 2013 at the prestigious Southern Scuffle presented by Defense Soap. Redshirt freshman Conner Hartmann advanced to the second day of competition, while a host of other Blue Devils had solid showings. Duke sits in 16th place of 25 teams with 16.5 points.

The Blue Devils rank second among ACC programs as The Southern Scuffle with Virginia sitting in sixth place overall. NC State and North Carolina are 18th and 21st, respectively.

Hartmann, seeded eighth at 197 pounds, started the tournament with a pair of byes to set him up with a match against ninth-seeded Craig Scott of Cornell in the third round. The Port Orchard, Wash., native posted a solid 6-2 decision over Scott to move into the quarterfinals. Hartmann faced a difficult task in the quarterfinal round versus top-seeded Quentin Wright of Penn State. Wright scored early and used six unanswered points for the 9-2 decision over Duke's Hartmann. Hartmann resumes action in the consolation bracket tomorrow against Marshall Haas of The Citadel.

Among the Blue Devils performing well in the tournament was Immanuel Kerr-Brown in his first action in a Duke singlet and Tanner Hough, advancing to the consolation fifth round.  Kerr-Brown returned to the Duke lineup at 157 pounds and started the day with a 6-2 decision over American's Mark Cirello. After falling to Virginia's Jedd Moore in the third round, the Rome, Ga., native rebounded with a 12-7 decision against Cornell's Christopher Dowdy before ending his day with a loss to Daniel Zilverberg of Minnesota.

Hough, after dropping his opening bout, rebounded with three consecutive wins to move into the fifth round portion of the consolation bracket. Among the wins was a 2-0 decision over North Carolina's Joey Moon to advance in consolation bracket. The sophomore ended his day with a tough 5-0 loss to Eric Wilson of Missouri.

At 184 pounds, Diego Bencomo started the tournament with a victory before dropping consecutive bouts, including a hard-fought 10-8 decision to Virginia foe Zach Nye to finish his day in the consolation fourth round. Another highlight for the Blue Devils was the return of heavyweight Andrew Fulk to the lineup. Fulk, recovered from an injury suffered last season, wrestled for the first time this year, dropping two narrow decisions.

Action resumes Jan. 2 for Hartmann at 9 a.m., in the consolation bracket. Fans can follow all of the action through links available at GoDuke.com.
