DURHAM, N.C.-Three Duke University men's lacrosse players were among the 64 players selected in the 2013 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft held in Philadelphia Friday night. Seniors Casey Carroll, Jake Tripucka and David Lawson were the Blue Devils chosen, pushing Duke's total MLL draft picks to 24 overall since 2003.
Carroll, a redshirt senior defenseman, was the first Blue Devil to go in the draft with the No. 18 pick overall in the third round by the Hamilton Nationals. Carroll returns to Duke for his fifth year after serving deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan as a member of the United States Army's 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. He was a first team All-America choice as a senior in 2007 and aims to help anchor the Blue Devil close defense this season. Carroll, 14th Blue Devil to be selected among the top 20 in the MLL draft, played in 57 games, including 41 starts, with 165 ground balls and four points prior to returning in 2013.
Tripucka and Lawson have been leaders in the midfield for the Blue Devils over the past three seasons. Lawson was selected with the 40th overall pick in the fifth round by the Rochester Rattlers. He will join a five other former Blue Devils who suited up for the Rattlers last season. Lawson, playing in 59 games during his career, has 37 goals and 15 assists for 52 points with 77 ground balls. He also recently was selected to serve as team captain in 2013.
A two-year starter in Duke's midfield, Tripucka went two picks later at No. 42 to the Hamilton Nationals. The Mountain Lakes, N.J., native is coming off a career-best season that saw him net 15 goals and 12 assists with 16 starts. Overall for his career, Tripucka has 24 goals and 23 assists for 47 points in 56 career games.
The Blue Devils open the 2013 campaign Feb. 9 against rival Denver at 12 p.m., at Koskinen Stadium. Duke will play four home games in the opening two weekends, including against Notre Dame, Feb. 16.
