DURHAM, N.C.-Duke's trio of junior attackmen Josh Dionne, Christian Walsh and Jordan Wolf has been selected to the 2013 Tewaaraton Award watch list the Tewaaraton Foundation announced Friday morning. The Tewaaraton is awarded to the nation's top men's and women's lacrosse player.
Dionne, Walsh and Wolf are beginning their second year together as the starting attack unit for the Blue Devils. Walsh and Wolf both are in their third campaign on the top attack line. Duke's threesome is among the 13 ACC players to be picked for the list.
Dionne, Duke's top returning goal scorer from a year ago, has five goals in the Blue Devils' four games this year. A second-year starter, the Merrimack, N.H., native netted 36 goals and seven points in 2012 and owns 51 tallies and 10 assists for 61 points in his 44 career games. He leads all current Blue Devils with 13 man-up scores for his career.
The 2012 ACC Tournament Most Outstanding Player, Walsh has started all but five games in his career. He has five goals and four assists for nine points to rank tied for second on the team. He registered 34 goals and 15 assists a year ago and has 92 points (60g, 32a) for his career. With just eight more points, Walsh will become the 40th Blue Devil to reach the 100-point plateau in his career.
Wolf, a two-time All-ACC choice, is Duke's top offensive playmaker with 13 goals and six assists for 19 points this season. Starting all but four games in his career, Wolf currently ranks tied for 24th on Duke's career points list with 135 (76g, 59a). He is among 14 current Division I players to have at least 50 career assists and is the top junior in the category. His 12 career hat tricks also rank tops among all juniors.
The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and top female college lacrosse player in the United States. The selection committees are made up of top collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by The Tewaaraton Foundation. Committees will make additions to these lists as the season progresses and athletes earn a spot alongside these elite players. Both lists will be narrowed to 25 men's and women's nominees in late April. In mid-May, five men's and five women's finalists will be announced. These finalists will be invited to Washington, D.C. for the 13th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony, May 30 at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian.
Duke continues its 2013 schedule at Penn Friday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. The no. 14 Blue Devils return home for the ACC opener March 2 versus No. 1 Maryland.
