DURHAM, N.C. –Tom Coffman, Duke’s Senior Associate Director of Athletics for Development, has been named the 2013 Fundraiser of the Year Award for the University Division by The National Association of Athletic Development Directors (NAADD).
“On behalf of NAADD, I want to congratulate Tom on being named this year’s NAADD Award winner and being a leader in our industry,” stated NAADD President Stephen Ponder, senior executive associate AD for external relations at the University of Mississippi. “We look forward to recognizing his accomplishments at the 2013 NAADD Convention.”
Coffman will be honored Friday, June 14 at the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Luncheon, held in conjunction with the 48th Annual NACDA Convention at the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando, Fla.
Coffman joined the Duke University athletic department in 2005 as the department's director of athletics development and now serves as a senior associate director of athletics, coordinating fundraising for all of Duke Athletics, including annual fund, major gifts, principal gifts, Varsity Club and campus recreation and club sports. During Coffman's tenure, Duke Athletics has raised funds totaling just under $300 million and secured the five largest financial commitments in Duke Athletics' history. He also has oversight of the special events staff for Duke Athletics, and is the sport administrator for men's and women's tennis.
Coffman came to Durham after serving the previous three years as a senior vice president for endowments at the Orthopaedic Research & Education Foundation in Rosemont, Ill. In this capacity, Coffman guided the fund-raising efforts for major gifts while directing the organization's $100 million Anniversary Campaign. In his 30-plus years of fundraising, the organizations he has served have raised in excess of $1 billion in support of education, research, medicine and college athletics.
A 1974 graduate of Heidelberg College, Coffman is a past president of both Cure International (2000-02) and Orthopaedic Research & Education Foundation (1997-2000; EVP from 1992-1997). In 2000 he was named an honorary member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. His experience on the collegiate level stems from stints at Tiffin University (director of athletics and dean of men from 1974-78 & 1980-81 and director of alumni relations and development from 1981-82), Albion College (vice president for institutional advancement from 1986-88; also served in other capacities from 1982-86) and University of Missouri-Rolla (vice chancellor for university advancement from 1988-92).
