KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The 2013 NCAA Zone B Diving Championships reached their conclusion Wednesday at the University of Tennessee's Allan Jones Aquatic Center, with two Duke divers qualifying for the NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.
Junior Nick McCrory bested the field in the men's platform competition Wednesday afternoon, totaling 947.00 points over two rounds of diving. The Chapel Hill, N.C., native earned 469.20 points in the preliminary round and increased his total with a score of 477.80 in the event final. Two of McCrory's finals dives registered in the 90-point range, as he received an award of 93.60 from the judges on his opening dive, a back 2 ½ somersault with 2 ½ twists in the pike position, and scored 96.00 points on his armstand dive in the fifth round.
In addition to McCrory's win on the platform, he also took first in Monday's 1-meter springboard competition, bumping teammate Jordan Long up a spot on the NCAA Championships qualification priority list. Long will now join McCrory in Indianapolis at the NCAA Championships following his third-place finish Tuesday on the 3-meter board.
"Nick did a great job today up on the platform," said diving coach Drew Johansen. "This will be the first time we've taken two male divers to NCAAs."
Freshman Jaimee Gundry totaled 224.85 points in the women's platform preliminary to qualify for the event final. In the platform final, Gundry totaled a personal-best 265.75 points on her list of five dives to come in sixth overall. Her highest-scoring dive of the afternoon came in the third round of the event final, when she received a score of 67.50 on a forward 3 ½ somersault in the pike position for a 3.0 degree of difficulty.
Fellow rookie Kendall McClenney also competed in the women's platform competition, posting a personal-best mark of 210.80 to take 17th in the preliminary round, while Deon Reid finished 14th in the men's platform preliminaries with a score of 274.65.
"The freshmen performed really well and learned a lot this weekend," Johansen said. "The whole team had a great weekend, as we placed divers in the finals in every event. We're looking forward to finishing off the season at the NCAA Championships."
The 2013 NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships will be held March 28-30 at the IU Natatorium and the IUPUI Sports Complex in Indianapolis, Ind.
