DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University standouts Chelsea Gray and Elizabeth Williams were listed on the John R. Wooden Award ballot that was sent out this week by the Los Angeles Athletic Club. Selected by the Wooden Award National Advisory Board, the ballot is made up of 15 student-athletes who have proven to their universities that they are making progress toward graduation and maintaining at least a cumulative 2.0 GPA.
Hundreds of members of the college basketball media will vote on the Wooden Award Player of the Year and All America team from 9:00 a.m. EST, Monday, March 18, 2013, through 3:00 p.m. EST, Wednesday, March 27, 2013, either online or through the mail.
Gray, who is out of Manteca, Calif., was having a standout season in 2012-13 prior to getting injured in the first half against Wake Forest on Sunday, Feb. 17. She suffered a dislocated kneecap and will miss the rest of the season, after starting the first 25 contests. Gray was averaging 13.1 points, 5.6 assists, 5.4 rebounds and 3.7 steals heading into game against the Demon Deacons. She leads the ACC in assists and steals, while ranking sixth nationally in steals as well.
A product of Virginia Beach, Va., Williams is coming off being named to the All-ACC Tournament first team as the Blue Devils captured their eighth ACC Championship on March 10 with a victory over 15th-ranked North Carolina. On the season, Williams has averaged 15.4 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.8 blocks, 1.3 assists and 1.2 steals for fifth-ranked Duke. The 6-3 center was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight year as well as being named to the All-ACC First Team.
Other student-athletes on the ballot includes Kelsey Bone (Texas A&M), Elena Delle Donne (Delaware), Skylar Diggins (Notre Dame), Stefanie Dolson (UConn), Brittney Griner (Baylor), Tianna Hawkins (Maryland), Maggie Lucas (Penn State), A’dia Mathies (Kentucky), Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis (UConn), Chiney Ogwumike (Stanford), Odyssey Sims (Baylor) and Alyssa Thomas (Maryland).
The Wooden Award All American Team, consisting of the nation’s top five players, will be announced the week of the “Elite Eight” round of the NCAA Tournament. The John R. Wooden Award Player of the Year will be announced at the 2013 Wooden Award Gala presented by Wendy’s on April 12, 2013, at The Los Angeles Athletic Club.
Duke (30-2, 17-1 ACC) is awaiting the NCAA Tournament selection show on Monday, March 18 at 7:00 p.m. The Blue Devils will host the NCAA Tournament first and second rounds on Sunday, March 24 at 12:00 and 2:30 p.m., and on Tuesday, March 26 at 7:00 p.m. The Blue Devils have won 16 straight NCAA Tournament games in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
