RALEIGH, N.C. – Duke Track and Field’s sweep of the two men’s distance relays serve as the highlight of the day at the Raleigh Relays Saturday, March 30 in Raleigh, N.C.  The men’s 4x1,500 meter relay team and the men’s 4x800m relay squad both finish in front of the pack while freshman Michael Foley earns a personal record mark by over ten feet in the men’s hammer throw.

“In both relays Duke was challenged in the first three legs but the anchors really made the difference to get the wins," commented Director of Track and Field Norm Ogilvie.

The men’s 4x1,500m relay team consisting of seniors Mike Moverman and James Kostelnik along with sophomore Brian Schoepfer and freshman Tommy Meister combined for a time of 15:38.63 to lead the field in the event.  Kostelnik ran the fastest time of the day, anchoring the Blue Devils with a split of 3:50.7.

Later in the day, the men’s 4x800m relay team crossed the line in 7:29.77 to finish first overall.  The young team consisted of mostly sophomores with Henry Farley, Nate McClafferty and Kyle Moran while freshman Michal Filipczak served as the anchor for the squad.  Filipczak’s team-best split of 1:49.8 carried the team into victory.

In the throws, Foley earned his way onto Duke’s all-time list with a personal record mark of 185-4 (56.50) on his fourth attempt in the men’s hammer throw to finish fifth overall.  Redshirt sophomore Kyler Shumway also competed in the event finishing 32nd

In the men’s javelin throw, sophomore Terrence Neal threw a near personal best mark of 156-5 (47.67) to finish 32nd and sophomore Zachary Robertshaw had a best throw of 146-6 (44.66) to finish 38th overall.

A pair of freshmen, Matthew Rodio and Abby Snyder, competed in the 400m hurdles with Rodio crossing the line in 36th place with a time of 56.23 and Snyder finishing in 35th place with a time of 1:05.00.

“It was a tremendous four days of athletics for Duke track and field. Curtis Beach was a great start and we had some great distance events Friday in California.  Then, the men’s 4x800 really added the cherry on top at the end today in Raleigh.”

The Blue Devils will return home next weekend, April 5-6 to compete in the Duke Invitational at Wallace Wade Stadium.  More information will be available later this week at www.GoDuke.com
