DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke rowing team returns to action at the Clemson Invitational April 20-21 in Clemson, S.C.  Recently, GoDuke.com sat down with senior Victoria Tsamis to learn more about the Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., native.

GoDuke.com: What has been your proudest moment at Duke?
Victoria Tsamis: My proudest moment at Duke would have to be this past fall. I was in the four [V4] and it was after our eighth race so we were all really tired. Coach even asked me, “are you sure you want to row?” and I said, “yeah, I want to do it with all my friends!” We rode it at the Hooch and it was crazy. We lost some of the boat’s parts while we were racing. It was pretty insane, but we ended up winning by about twenty seconds.

GoDuke.com: What is the most misunderstood thing about rowing?
VT: A lot of people think rowing is an arm-based sport. I will tell someone I row and they will usually flex their bicep or something. It’s actually mostly legs.

GoDuke.com: What is your favorite class at Duke?
VT: I don’t know if I have a favorite class, but Dr. Gavin is a Civil Engineering professor and his classes are really great. He’s really funny and he has a really dry sense of humor, so often not a lot of people will be laughing but I’ll be laughing so hard.

GoDuke.com: What has been your most difficult class at Duke?
VT: Fluid Mechanics. It was a struggle.

GoDuke.com: What is your favorite spot on campus?
VT: The Dillo [Armadillo Grill]. It’s got to be the Dillo. I’m sad that it’s leaving next year, but I’m also happy that it’s graduating with me. We go there every Friday night for dinner and probably at least three or four more times during the week.

GoDuke.com: Can you tell me about the first time you started rowing?
VT: I actually got into rowing my freshman year here. I walked onto the team, so the first time I got into the boat I was with people who also had never rowed before which was interesting. It was fun.

GoDuke.com: What chore do you hate doing?
VT: No. I am a cleaning fanatic. I like doing laundry. I like to vacuum, some of my favorite pastimes. Swiffering is also fun.

GoDuke.com: Who has influenced your life the most?
VT: I think it would have to be my parents. They’ve supported me through everything, especially with rowing. I have a breathing condition, so every time I go out to practice or race my dad will always tell me be careful, which I think is pretty cute.

GoDuke.com: If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would buy?
VT: Well, I actually started making a list. I know a new boat house is on there for the team. That was definitely up high on the list.

GoDuke.com: If you could play another sport, what would it be?
VT: I would probably be really bad at it, but I’ve always wanted to try ice hockey just because I’m a terrible ice skater. I think if I could be able to play ice hockey that would be an achievement.

GoDuke.com: Do you have any hidden talents?
VT: Usually if I have a talent, I will show it off so I don’t know. I can solve a Rubik’s Cube.

GoDuke.com: What is one possession you can’t live without?
VT: I would say that would have to change depending on the season or the semester, but this semester I would have to say I can’t live without my sweatbands. I wear sweatbands like every day when we are at practice, and if I forget it I just feel so lost and my forehead feels very cold.

GoDuke.com: What advice would you give to incoming freshman at Duke?
VT: I would tell them to enjoy it. Sometimes you take for granted that you are at Duke playing a sport. Even being in the water, I think to myself how great it is.
