DURHAM, N.C. – Duke earned All-ACC honors in both the men’s and women’s shot put, had impressive performances in the multi-events and saw another record broken by redshirt junior Curtis Beach on Day Two of the 2013 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Raleigh, N.C., Friday April 19. Both squads sit in third place in the team standings with the men’s team collecting 33 points and the women’s team collecting 36 points.
In the shot put, redshirt freshman Stephen Boals set a personal record and finished third in the men’s division with a mark of 57-9.50 (17.61). The mark was also good enough to bump him up to fourth on Duke’s all-time list. Redshirt sophomore Kyler Shumway also set a new personal record with a mark of 52-0.50 (15.86), narrowly missing scoring by finishing in ninth place overall.
In the women’s event, redshirt junior Michelle Anumba finished third earning a mark of 53-4.5 (16.27) to give her the All-ACC honor. She will return to competition tomorrow in the women’s hammer throw.
In the women’s heptathlon, redshirt freshman Karli Johonnot earned All-ACC honors with a third place finish with 5,016 total points. This score betters her performance from the Texas Relays by 167 points and ranks her second on Duke’s all-time list. The Las Vegas, Nev., native edged out teammate sophomore Baily Murphy by two points for the third place slot.
Murphy had an impressive final day in her first heptathlon ever by earning personal records in the long jump, with a mark of 18-4.25 (5.59) to place her third on Duke’s all-time list, and throwing the javelin 104-06 (31.86). To end the competition, she won her first 800 meter race of her college career which allowed her to finish with 5,014 total points, placing her third on Duke’s all-time list in the seven-event competition. Junior Miray Seward also scored points for the Blue Devils by finishing eighth with a personal-best point total of 4, 608. The Dunwoody, Ga., native earned personal bests in both the long jump and javelin throw.
In the men’s decathlon, freshman Robert Rohner was affected by injuries collected during day one of the competition. In the 110 high hurdles, the first event of the day, the Sumter, S.C., native started but did not finish the event. Then, in the men’s discus he earned a personal best mark of 124-6 (37.96). He did not earn marks in two of the remaining three events and finished eighth overall with 4,750 earning a valuable point for the men’s team score.
In the qualifying events, Beach set his second school record in as many weeks by completing the 400 in 46.72. The time was good enough to advance him to tomorrow’s championship final. Sophomore Elizabeth Kerpon competed in the women’s race, qualifying for the finals with a time of 54.45.
Beach also finished fifth in the men’s long jump with his best leap measuring 24-7.75 (7.51). Beach picked up his best mark on his third attempt less than 30 minutes after his 400 meter qualifying run.
ACC Indoor Track and Field 800 meter champion Cydney Ross along with All-ACC honoree Anima Banks both qualified for the 800 finals set for Saturday. Ross advanced by winning her heat in 2:07.66 while Banks advanced based on her time of 2:07.12. In the men’s division, freshman Michal Filipczak advanced to his first ACC final by crossing first in his heat earning a time of 1:53.25.
In the men’s javelin, sophomore Zachary Robertshaw earned a personal record to finish seventh overall with a throw of 189-9 (57.84).
To close out the day, senior Esther Vermeer finished sixth in the women’s steeple chase with a time of 10:32.36. Junior Ashley Berry also participated in the event and broke the 11 minute mark for the first time in her career by finishing in eighth place in 10:55.09.
In the men’s race, which was delayed due to impending weather, sophomore Shaun Thompson finished in eighth place with a time of 9:08.23 while junior Christian Britto and senior Dominick Robinson crossed the line in 16th and 22nd place respectively.
