DURHAM, N.C. – Entering the final week of the regular season, the Duke baseball team hits the road for its final non-conference matchup, traveling to UNC Greensboro for a 6 p.m., game against the Spartans at UNCG Baseball Stadium. The two teams met earlier this season as Duke defeated UNCG, 17-2, April 9 at Jack Coombs Field.
Duke (25-26, 9-18 ACC) totaled a season-high 18 hits and 17 runs in the first game of the home-and-home series with UNC Greensboro. Redshirt sophomore Chris Marconcini drove in a career-high five RBI, belting a triple and a home run in the contest, while Jordan Betts, Kenny Koplove and Ryan Munger had three hits each.
Marconcini raised his average to .290 after a 6-for-10 weekend against No. 7 Virginia. The Brentwood Tenn., native currently leads the Blue Devils in slugging percentage (.551), home runs (8), total bases (97) and walks (27).
Koplove, a rookie from Philadelphia, Pa., is tops on the Blue Devil roster with a .307 average. Koplove looks to become the first freshman to lead Duke in batting average since Vaughn Schill hit a team-best .388 as a rookie in 1997.
After suffering a sweep at No. 7 Virginia over the weekend, Duke looks to get back on track with a win Tuesday evening. The Blue Devils took a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth in Friday’s series opener before the Cavaliers rallied for three runs in the final frame. Duke was unable to limit Virginia’s offensive production Saturday and Sunday, falling to UVa by scores of 17-8 and 14-6, respectively.
UNC Greensboro (22-29, 9-18 SoCon) dropped two-of-three games over the weekend to conference foe Furman. The Spartans are hitting .310 as a team, led by Christian Wolfe who is batting .416 with 17 doubles, four home runs and 37 RBI.
Steve Barnes will call the action for the Blue Devil Network audio broadcast, available through GoDuke.com.
Duke wraps up the regular season with a three-game series against NC State Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
