SILKEBORG, DENMARK – Rising sophomore Mads Soegaard of the Duke men’s golf team led his native Denmark to a fifth place finish in the first flight in the 2013 European Amateur Team Championship at the par-72 Silkeborg Golf Course.

The European Amateur Team Championship is comprised of the top amateurs across Europe, representing 16 countries. The teams are grouped into two flights based on their scores from the opening two rounds of stroke play, before squaring off in match play.

In the two rounds of stroke play, Soegaard finished third individually with two consecutive even par rounds of 72, finishing one stroke behind co-medalists Rory McNamara of Ireland and James Ross of Scotland. Throughout the 36 holes of stroke play, Soegaard carded seven birdies, 23 pars, five bogeys and one double bogey to lead Denmark to a sixth place team finish with a 32-over par, 752.

Incoming freshman Alex Matlari, representing his native Germany, finished 50th in stroke play at nine-over par with rounds of 77 and 76, respectively. He recorded three birdies, 21 pars and 12 bogeys throughout the two rounds. Germany concluded stroke play as the fourth seed after firing a 23-over par, 743, over the first two days of competition.

France captured the stroke play title, with a seven-over, 735, six shots better than runner-up Ireland and earning the No. 1 seed in match play.

The match play portion of the tournament saw the countries go head-to-head with a combination of four-ball matches and singles matches.

The quarterfinal round saw Denmark drop its match against third seed England, 5-2, before pulling off the upset against second seed Ireland, 4.5-1. Soegaard, Denmark’s top golfer, played to a 3-1 ledger in match play. He claimed a 5-and-4 victory over Ireland’s Gavin Moynihan in the consolation semifinals. In Saturday’s fifth place match against Austria, a 3.5-1.5 Denmark victory, Soegaard carded a 4-and-3 against Lukas Lipold.

Matlari went 0-2 for the week in match play for fourth seeded Germany. He fought hard before falling to Ireland’s Moynihan, 2-and-1, in Saturday’s seventh place match. A product of Heidelberg, Germany, Matlari fell to Austria’s Mattias Schwab, 3-and-2 in the consolation semifinals earlier in the week. Germany finished eighth overall in the tournament.

England won the event with a 4.5-2.5 victory over Scotland in the finals of match play, Saturday.
