OSHAWA, ONTARIO – Former Blue Devils Sarah Bullard and Megan Huether helped the U.S. women’s national lacrosse team defend its gold medal at the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Cup, guiding Team USA to a 19-5 win over host Canada in the title game Saturday afternoon. The championship marks the seventh overall for the U.S., which has now reached the final in all nine World Cup tournaments and claimed the title in 1982, 1989, 1993, 1997, 2001, 2009 and 2013.

After taking a 3-1 lead in the opening minutes, Team USA tallied 11 of the game’s next 12 goals to lead 14-2 at the half. The scoring continued in the second stanza as the U.S. went on to win by a 14-goal margin, defeating Canada for the second time in the tournament.

Huether posted five saves in the win over Canada, giving her 15 for the tournament. Fellow Duke graduate Bullard totaled eight goals over Team USA’s seven games.

The U.S. finished the World Cup with a 7-0 ledger and set program and tournament records in goals (127), goals per game (18.0) and margin of victory (13.2). The squad also outscored its opponents by a combined score of 127-34.
