SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Duke women’s tennis team started strong Friday at the San Diego State University Fall Classic as all three Blue Devils won their singles matches and the doubles duo of Alyssa Smith and Marianne Jodoin cruised to a first round victory at the Aztec Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.
The Duke tandem of Jodoin/Smith posted an 8-3 win over Grand Canyon University’s Priscilla Annoual and Silvia Tumova in the first round of the red doubles bracket. The Blue Devil duo will next face Jessica Perez and Elanor Grossman of Loyola Marymount on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. (EST).
In singles action, Duke’s 78th-ranked Jodoin posted a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Susana Alcaraz of New Mexico State University. Jodoin will go up against Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai of Pepperdine at 10 a.m., on Saturday.
A product of Portland, Ore., Annie Mulholland made her season debut with a 6-4, 6-2 straight set win against Marta Stojanovic of San Diego in round one. In the next round, she will take on Yuki Chiang of Pepperdine.
Both Jodoin and Mulholland are seeded in the Red Bracket for singles.
Smith, who is out of Laguna Niguel, Calif., registered a 6-1, 7-6 (5) win versus Denise Van Der Ben of New Mexico State. Michaela Capannolo of Pepperdine will be Smith’s next opponent in the blue bracket.
