PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – After winning five straight matches to open the 2013 campaign at the Riviera/ITA All-American, Duke University sophomore Beatrice Capra fell in the final eight of the singles main draw on Friday afternoon at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
A native of Ellicott City, Md., Capra downed 12th-ranked Petra Niedermayerova of Kansas State, 6-1, 6-0, in the final 16 earlier on Friday before going up against top-seeded and second-ranked Robin Anderson of UCLA in the Elite Eight. In the opening set, Capra went ahead 5-4 and had set point with a 40-0 lead over Anderson, but lost four set points on her way to dropping the first set, 5-7. Capra came back in the second set and won 6-3, before falling in the third and deciding set, 1-6.
In the singles consolation bracket, senior Hanna Mar totaled a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over 29th-ranked Lorraine Guillermo of Pepperdine to advance to the final eight. Mar, who is out of Burr Ridge, Ill., next went up against Virginia’s ninth-ranked Julia Elbaba and lost 3-6, 6-7 (3) to end her run.
Duke will next compete in the ITA Regionals in Chapel Hill, N.C., from Oct. 17-21.
