PORTLAND, Ore. – The Duke women’s tennis team opened play at the USTA Collegiate Invitational on Friday at the Tualatan Hills Tennis Center in Portland, Ore., with five victories in singles and doubles.
Duke’s Mar and Smith closed the day with an 8-7 loss to Brooke Bolender and Emina Bektas of Michigan.
Mar, Goldfeld and Smith each totaled singles wins on Friday. Mar, who is out of Burr Ridge, Ill., cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 straight set win over Texas A&M’s Mason Strickland. Goldfeld, who is ranked 42nd nationally, notched a 6-3, 6-1 win over Anat Rabinovich of Texas, while Smith took down Lina Padegimaite of Texas, 7-5, 6-7 (6), 7-5.
Playing in her home state of Oregon, Mulholland dropped a 6-0, 6-4 decision to Maggie Lehmicke of Nebraska and 78th-ranked Marianne Jodoin fell, 6-2, 6-3, to 63rd-ranked Catherine Harrison of UCLA.
The singles and doubles action will resume on Saturday.
