DURHAM, N.C. – Rodney Hood scored 21 points, while adding nine rebounds and four assists to lead Duke to an 81-65 win over Drury in an exhibition game at Cameron Indoor Stadium Saturday. Duke outscored the Panthers 47-27 in the second half of play to overcome a four-point halftime deficit
Amile Jefferson added 13 points and 16 rebounds for the Blue Devils, who trailed 38-34 at intermission. Quinn Cook and Jabari Parker also reached double-figures with 13 points apiece for the Blue Devils.
Cameron Adams scored 16 points to lead Drury, the reigning NCAA Division II champion. Kameron Bundy added 11 points and Ian Carter had 10 points for the Panthers.
Drury knocked down three first half three-pointers and scored 12 second chance points on nine offensive rebounds to grab a 38-34 lead at the half. Duke shot 40.6 percent (13-of-32) from the field and went just 1-of-7 from three-point range in the opening half. The Blue Devils also missed six free throws and committed six turnovers in a sloppy opening 20 minutes.
Drury led 44-41 with just over 15 minutes remaining in the contest before Cook ignited a 17-4 Duke run. The junior point guard started and finished the spurt with a three-pointer and sandwiched a three-point play in between. His three-pointer from the top of the key gave the Blue Devils a 59-48 lead with 9:45 to play.
Jefferson greatly impacted Duke's second half turnaround with seven points, 12 rebounds and three assists after intermission. The Philadelphia, Pa., native closed the day with eight offensive rebounds. Jones also sparked the second half rally with seven points and three steals.
The Blue Devils closed the game with a 42-35 edge on the glass, including a 20-11 advantage in offensive rebounds. Duke held Drury to zero second chance points in the second half of play.
Duke's high-powered offensive attach was thwarted by sub-par shooting from three-point distance and the foul line. The Blue Devils shot just 27.3 percent (6-of-22) from downtown, while missing 13 free throws (15-of-28) in the contest.
Duke opens the 2013-14 regular season Friday, Nov. 8 at Cameron Indoor Stadium against Davidson. The game is slated to tip at 7 p.m. and will air on ESPNU.
