DURHAM, N.C. – The Black team downed the Blue squad 4-1 in game 5 of the Duke baseball team’s Blue vs. Black Fall World Series Saturday at Jack Coombs Field. After dropping the first game of the series, Black came back strong to win four straight, taking the series 4-1 over Blue.
Rain on Friday forced the team to postgame the conclusion of game five to Saturday. Freshman Bailey Clark looked sharp on the mound, holding the Blue team hitless over three innings. The Asheville, N.C., native did not allow an earned run or a walk. Junior Garret Hayward also turned in a solid performance on the mound, permitting just one hit over two innings of work.
Freshman Karl Blum performed well for Blue in the loss, giving up just one hit over 2.1 innings of work. Sophomore Michael Matuella suffered the loss for Blue, yielding two earned runs over 2.2 innings.
A first inning Jordan Betts two-run home run gave the Black team a lead it would not relinquish the rest of the way. Blue scored its lone run of the contest on a Ryan Deitrich sacrifice fly in the third inning.
The Blue Devils open the regular season with a a three-game series at Jack Coombs Field against Binghamton Feb. 14-16.
