DURHAM, N.C. -- The 10th-ranked Duke women’s tennis team travels to Las Vegas, Nev., Friday, Jan. 17, to compete in the 12th annual Freeman Memorial Championship, hosted by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). The Blue Devils are set to face stout competition at the event, with all but one team nationally ranked among the top 10 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

The top-ranked Stanford team highlights the event, with No. 2 Florida, No. 3 North Carolina, No. 5 UCLA, No. 5 USC, No. 7 Texas A&M and No. 50 UNLV all set to also supply competitors for the event. Twelve singles players enter the tournament ranked in the top 50 by the ITA, as well as two of the top three-ranked doubles teams are also set to compete.

The Blue Devils return to competition following a convincing, 6-1, season-opening win against William & Mary, Sunday, Jan. 12, when No. 49 senior Hanna Mar, No. 45 junior Ester Goldfeld, freshman Chalena Scholl, senior Marianne Jodoin and freshman Alyssa Smith all secured victories in singles play. The duos of 14th-ranked junior Annie Mulholland and Goldfeld and senior Rachel Kahan and Jodoin also captured wins in the contest as doubles pairs.

Capra, who secured the No. 2 seed in the tournament, opens competition Friday at 11:30 a.m. (PST), facing USC’s No. 60 Giuliana Olmos. The competition marks the first singles match of the 2014 spring season for Capra, who only participated in doubles play against William & Mary.

Smith, in her first collegiate spring tournament, faces the highest-ranked opponent of any Blue Devil in the opening round, as the Laguna Niguel, Calif., native is set to take on Florida’s No. 17 Olivia Janowicz. Smith and Janowicz are slated for a 10:30 a.m. (PST) start.

Jodoin returns to competition following a stellar match against William & Mary’s Sydney Smith, in which Jodoin did not concede a single game. The Varennes, Quebec, native looks to advance in the tournament, facing UCLA’s Kyle McPhilips, who is tied ranked 36th by the ITA, at 11:30 a.m. (PST).

Similar to Jodoin, Scholl did not drop a game in her dual-match play debut against William & Mary. The Pompano Beach, Fla., native opens play at the Freeman Memorial Championship against UCLA’s No. 24 Jennifer Brady, with a start time set for Friday at 10:30 a.m. (PST).

Mar looks to replicate her dual-match season opener against William & Mary’s Maria Belaya, in which she won, 6-2, 6-2. Mar is scheduled to face Stanford’s No. 41 Taylor Davidson Friday at 10:30 a.m.

Mulholland and Goldfeld round out the Duke squad set to open competition Friday. Mulholland is slated to take on USC’s Zoe Scandalis Friday at 10:30 (PST), while Goldfeld faces UNLV’s Paola Artiga at the same time.
In doubles play, the freshman duo of Scholl and Smith are set to take on UNLV’s Lucia Batta and Santa Shumilina while Duke’s No. 14 team of Mulholland and Goldfeld compete against UNLV’s Alexis Garrett and Anett Ferenczi-Bako. Both matches are set for a 10 a.m. (PST) start.

Jodoin and Kahan are tasked with facing the No. 1 doubles team in the nation, UCLA’s Robin Anderson and Jennifer Brady. The Blue Devil duo returns to action following a 6-1 victory over William & Mary’s Julia Casselbury and Melanie Roy. The contest is set for 10 a.m. (PST).

Capra and Mar compete as a doubles team for the second time this season, competing against Stanford’s No. 16 pair of Taylor Davidson and Ellen Tsay. In their previous contest, Mar and Capra played to a 4-3 unfinished match. The Blue Devil pair is set to compete at 10 a.m. (PST).

Doubles competition begins at 10 a.m. (PST) Friday, followed by singles competition set for a 10:30 a.m. (PST) start time.
