LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The 10th-ranked Duke women’s tennis team returned to competition Saturday, during day two of the Freeman Memorial Championship at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), in Las Vegas, Nev. The contest, held at the Fertitta Tennis Complex, boasts some of the best talent in the nation, with competitors supplied by five teams ranked in the top 10 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Duke continued facing stout doubles competition in the quarterfinal round of play Saturday. The tandem of sophomore Beatrice Capra and senior Hanna Mar were up to the task, advancing to the doubles semifinal round after upsetting USC’s No. 3 Brynn Boren and Zoe Katz, 6-3. The duo improved to 2-0 on the season against ranked opponents, following a first-round victory over Stanford’s No. 16 pair of Taylor Davidson and Ellen Tsay. The No. 14 duo of juniors Annie Mulholland and Ester Goldfeld could not maintain the momentum from yesterday’s 6-1 victory, falling to USC’s No. 7 double’s team of Zoe Scandalis and Giuliana Olmos. The freshmen team of Chalena Scholl and Alyssa Smith defaulted against UCLA’s Kyle McPhillips and Catherine Harrison. In the doubles consolation quarterfinals, seniors Marianne Jodoin and Rachel Kahan advanced after defeating North Carolina’s Whitney Kay and Ashley Dai, 7-6.

In singles action Saturday, the Blue Devil’s posted a 1-4 record, with No. 45 Goldfeld defeating UCLA’s No. 36 Kyle McPhillips, 6-2, 6-0, in an added singles match. Mulholland dropped her singles consolation quarterfinals match against UCLA’s Catherine Harrison, 6-2, 6-2, while Jodoin dropped her contest against USC’s No. 60 Giuliana Olmos, 6-4, 6-1. Duke’s 49th-ranked Mar, playing in an added singles match, fell to USC’s Zoe Scandalis, 6-3, 6-4. Smith rounded out the Duke contingent participating in an added singles match, losing a hard-fought contest against Stanford’s Krista Hardebeck, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7).

The Freeman Memorial Championship resumes Sunday morning at 10 a.m. (PST), beginning with the doubles semifinals and followed by the doubles final match. Singles final action kicks off at 11 a.m. (PST).
