DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke volleyball team is set to send seven representatives to the U.S. Women’s National Team open tryouts at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Freshmen Sasha Karelov, Jordan Tucker and Alyse Whitaker join sophomores Breanna Atkinson, Emily Sklar and Christina Vucich as well as junior Maggie Deichmeister at the event, which runs Friday-Sunday, Feb. 21-23.
A record 248 current college-aged and older players will attend the U.S. Women’s National Team tryouts, vying for spots on the U.S. Women’s National Team and/or U.S. Collegiate National Teams program. Three-time Olympic gold medalist and U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame member Karch Kiraly and the U.S. Women’s National team staff will lead the three-day audition.
Beginning at 12 p.m. (ET) Friday, Feb. 21, USA Volleyball will stream the tryouts at
Duke (28-5, 18-2 ACC) enjoyed an outstanding season in 2013, reaching the NCAA Tournament for an ACC-leading 18th time in program history. The Blue Devils clinched the 2013 ACC Championship, the program’s 11th league title, in a thrilling 3-2 victory over North Carolina in the regular season finale. Head coach Jolene Nagel took home ACC Coach of the Year and AVCA All-Region Coach of the Year honors, while third team All-American Sklar garnered ACC Player of the Year accolades and honorable mention All-American Ali McCurdy picked up her third consecutive ACC Defensive Player of the Year nod.
