DURHAM, N.C. – Duke placed second in the varsity eight and won the third varsity eight in competition against Buffalo, Clemson, Iowa, Kansas and Purdue Saturday on Lake Hartwell.
Racing on the home water of ACC rival Clemson, Duke’s V8 finished second behind only the Tigers in the marquee event with a season-best time of 6:49.03 to best Iowa (6:55.18), Buffalo (6:59.79), Kansas (7:05.13) and Purdue (7:24.50). Clemson won the race at 6:42.69.
In the 3V8, Duke took first in a field of seven boats with a time of 7:16.7, which was just under two seconds faster than second-place finisher Iowa (7:18.0). Duke torched the rest of the field, besting the remaining five finishers by more than seven seconds.
The Blue Devils also recorded top-three finishes in the second varsity eight, fourth varsity eight and second varsity four. In the 2V8, the Blue Devils broke the seven-minute plateau, posting a 6:59.90 mark to finished under five seconds behind first-place Clemson (6:56.00) and second-place Iowa (6:56.42).
The race on Lake Hartwell marks the first of three trips to Clemson, S.C., for the Duke rowing team. They will return to the Tigers’ home water for the Clemson Invitational on April 19-20 and then again for the ACC Championship on May 17. Prior to the Clemson Invitational, however, Duke will make a cross-country trek to Lowell, Ore., on April 5 for the Oregon State Classic on Dexter Lake.
