DURHAM, N.C. – The 2018 Duke men’s cross country schedule was released Thursday morning, as announced by head coach Norm Ogilvie.
“This team has a great mix of rising sophomores and incoming freshmen that can make us dangerous,” Ogilvie said. “We’ve got some good senior leadership from Nikhil Pulimood and a transfer from Georgetown that will really help us.”
The Blue Devils begin competition Friday, Aug. 31, making the trip to Mebane, N.C., for the Elon Opener.
“We’re looking forward to opening the 2018 season with a short trip to Elon,” commented Ogilvie. “That opener should give us an opportunity to run our full roster and see who’s done their work over the summer.”
Duke will return to Rock Hill, S.C., as the Blue Devils try to defend their 2017 title at the Winthrop Invite on Saturday, Sept. 15. Duke closes out its September slate of contests as it travels to Minneapolis, Minn., for the Roy Griak Invite on Saturday, Sept. 29.
“The Winthrop Invite is held on the site of the NCAA Southeast Regional meet and gives us a chance to preview the course of the most important meet of the year for us,” said Ogilvie. “We’ll take our best 10 runners to Minneapolis for the Roy Griak invitational, one of the nation’s best meets every year. We’ll have a chance to go head-to-head against great teams and hopefully score some points to help us get an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships.”
The Blue Devils will split up during the final weekend of the regular season. On Friday, Oct. 12, the Blue Devils will attempt to repeat as champions of the ECU Pirate Invite in Greenville, N.C., followed by Pre-Nationals on Saturday, Oct. 13 in Madison, Wis.
The 2018 men’s ACC Championship is slated for Friday, Oct. 26 in Boston, Mass., hosted by Boston College.
“The ACC Championship will be hosted by Boston College at Franklin Park, which is a historic course,” added Ogilvie. “It’ll be fun for our kids to compete on such an iconic venue. We’re hoping to continue to move up the ACC ranks. We improved in the standings last year and want to move up again.”
Qualifying Blue Devils will compete at the NCAA Southeast Regional in Rock Hill, S.C., on Friday, Nov. 9 and on Saturday, Nov. 17 at the NCAA Championships in Madison, Wis.
