CLEMSON, S.C. – The No. 17 Duke rowing team earned four first place finishes and placed all five boats in the Grand Finals in the first day of the ACC Championship at Lake Hartwell on the campus of Clemson Friday evening.
The Blue Devils started off the evening in the second heat of the 3V8, where Duke took second behind Syracuse with a time of 6:51.534. Duke earned its first of four first place finishes two heats later, as the 2V4 boat clocked a time of 7:27.856, just over two seconds faster than second place Clemson (7:29.747).
In the second heat of the V4, the Blue Devils recorded a top time of 7:14.170, seven seconds faster than second place Clemson (7:21.153). In heat number two of the 2V8, Duke outraced Syracuse by just over six seconds, clocking a first place time of 6:34.974 for its third first place finish of the evening.
Duke finished day one of the ACC Championship with the V8 boat registering a first place time of 6:26.740, four-plus seconds faster than Syracuse (6:30.583), who finished second.
To qualify for Saturday’s Grand Finals, the Blue Devils had to finish top three in each heat they participated in. Duke sends all five boats to the Grand Finals for the second time in school history and second straight season.
Duke begins competition tomorrow in lane four in the 3V8 Grand Final at 8:15 a.m. The Blue Devils hold lane five for the 2V4 Grand Final at 8:40 a.m., followed by the V4 Grand Final at 9:05 a.m., where they will compete in lane six. Duke will race in lane six for the final two Grand Finals, which include the 2V8 (9:30 a.m.) and the V8 Grand Final (9:55 a.m.).
