Southern Intercollegiate Champion, 1938, 1939

Carolinas Golf Hall of Fame

Stewart "Skip" Alexander is considered one of the finest golfers in Duke history. He led the Blue Devils to three Southern Conference titles and two state championships during his college career (1938-40), while twice winning the conference individual title. He was a two-time Southern Intercollegiate medalist and twice reached the quarter-finals of the National Intercollegiate Tournament.

Born in Philadelphia, but raised in Durham, Alexander turned professional in 1941 and joined the PGA Tour in 1946. He won his first pro tournament, the Tucson Open, in 1948. But two years later his promising career was interrupted by tragedy, as he was the lone survivor of a fiery plane crash. After undergoing 17 major operations for his severely burned hands, he returned to the golf course to help the United States win the 1951 Ryder Cup.

Alexander won the Ben Hogan Trophy for handicapped golfers in 1959, was inducted into the Carolinas Golf Hall of Fame last year and is a 1987 inductee for the N.C. Sports Hall of Fame.
