Durham native Gordon Carver was one of the top all-around athletes ever to attend Duke University. From 1941-45, he earned nine varsity letters at Duke - four in football, three in basketball and two in track.
Carver was an All-Southern Conference football selection in 1944 and 1945 and captained the 1944 team to a 29-26 Sugar Bowl victory over Alabama - Duke's first football bowl win.
Carver was an all-purpose threat, leading the team in receiving all four years, rushing for over 1,000 career yards, and punting for a 40-yard average. He was also an all-conference performer on Duke's Southern Conference champion basketball teams of 1944 and 1945. Carver led the team in scoring both seasons and captained the team his senior year.
In the spring, Carver ran track where he excelled as a member of the 440 and mile relay teams.
