Football, 1931-32-33
All-America, 1933
National Football Hall of Fame

Fred Crawford is one of four 1976 inductees who also hold membership in the National Football Hall of Fame. A native of Waynesville, NC, Crawford came to Duke an became the first football player to gain All-America honors from the state of North Carolina. Named on practically every All-America football team in 1933, Crawford is rated one of the greatest tackles of all time.

He reached the height of tackle play in a victory over Tennessee in 1933. Coach Bob Neyland of the Vols said Crawford's play was the difference in the 10-2 Blue Devil victory. Crawford's 10-flat speed in the 100 made the rugged tackle one of the most feared down-field blockers and punt coverage men in the business.

Crawford was a State Department official in Florida at the time of his death.
