Tom Davis was one of the greatest backfield men in Duke football history. He was named First Team All-Southern Conference three consecutive years (1942-43-44). In 1944, he was selected the Blue Devils' Most Valuable Player and was named All-America. Davis was a member of the historic 1942 Rose Bowl team and was the game's leading rusher with 80 yards. In 1944, he helped lead Duke to its third straight undefeated Southern Conference season and a trip to the Sugar Bowl. In one of the most exciting Sugar Bowls ever played, Duke came from behind to defeat Alabama, 29-26. In that contest, Davis had an incredible stretch where he carried the ball ten consecutive plays. Davis gained 50 yards in that drive and scored to put Duke ahead 20-19. Davis, who also won the Jacobs Blocking Trophy in 1944, still holds Duke's four-year career scoring record with 168 points. He was also Duke's leading passer and handled the punting chores from 1942-44. Davis' athletic prowess wasn't limited to the gridiron. In 1945, he batted over .400 for the Blue Devil baseball team.
