Art Wall, Jr., a native of Honesdale, PA, left Duke in 1949 to become one of the great names on the professional golf tour during the late fifties and early sixties. Wall, who captained the Duke golf team in 1949, led the Blue Devils to back-to-back Southern Conference titles in 1948 and 1949. He was a key member of the 1947 team that finished second in the nation and the 1948 team that placed third. Following his career at Duke, he went on the pro tour and through 1976 had collected a total of 14 tour championships. He was three times named to the U.S. Ryder Cup team and also picked up eight victories on the Caribbean Circuit. The year 1959 probably marked the peak of Wall's golf game. That season he was the tour's leading money winner, won the Vardon Trophy (for lowest stroke average) and was named PGC Golfer of the Year after winning the Masters. His Masters victory stands out as one of the all-time great finishes in that tournament's history. Firing a final round 66, including birdies on five of the final six holes, Wall edged Cary Middlecoff by one stroke.
