The mission of the Duke Leadership Program is to proactively develop and enhance the leadership skills of student-athletes, coaches and athletic department administrators.
Student Athlete Advisory Council
The Student-Athlete Advisory Council is composed of representatives of each varsity team. It meets regularly to discuss issues relevant to the quality of the experience of Duke student-athletes. The SAAC also offers input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes' lives on NCAA member institution campuses.
1st Year Action Program
The 1st Year ACTION Program is multifaceted in helping first year student-athletes effectively lead themselves during this transition year at Duke. The Learning to Lead element of this program focuses on Effective Transition Skills, Role Acceptance, Being a Good Teammate, and Initial Leadership Development. All first year student-athletes participate in this year long program that utilizes workshops, guest speakers, self-reflection and small group discussion.
The Sophomore Outdoor Leadership Experience is an overnight retreat at Camp Chestnut Ridge in nearby Efland for sophomore student-athletes. The focus of S.O.L.E. to help these sophomores begin to explore and understand their roles as future team leaders through activities that challenge them individually and in groups.
The Advancing Leaders Program is centered on preparing juniors to take on future leadership roles within their teams. Topics include Core Values, Leadership Self-Evaluation, Being an Effective Leader, Developing a Leadership Plan, Role of the Leader and Team Relations. Future peer networks are established and generate a great opportunity for leadership skills to be solidified as the roles of these Advancing Leaders increase on their teams.
Chillin’ & Grilllin’
The Leadership Year kicks off with our Annual Chillin’and Grillin’ event. Team Leaders, SAAC Representatives, Mentors and Athletic Department Administrators participate in this fun event that requires all involved to “Kick It Up A Notch” by working together, using some creativity and resourcefulness to see just what their leadership skills and team work can cook up.
