DURHAM, N.C. – The top-seeded and second-ranked Duke men's lacrosse team will meet fourth-seeded and top-ranked Cornell in the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Md. Face-off is set for 2:30 p.m., and the game will be televised live by ESPN2.
The first semifinal pits third-seeded Johns Hopkins versus Delaware at 12 noon. The national championship game is set for Monday, May 28 at 1 p.m. on ESPN. Ticket information can be found at www.lax4baltimore.org or by calling 410-261-RAVE.
The Blue Devils enter the weekend at 16-2 overall following their 19-11 victory over North Carolina in last Sunday's quarterfinal game in Annapolis. Duke makes its third appearance in the national semifinals and is led by the attack tandem of Matt Danowski and Zack Greer. Danowski leads the country in both assists (49) and total points (91) while Greer, who had a game-high seven goals in the quarterfinal win over the Tar Heels, paces the nation in goals scored with 63 -- a total that matches the fourth-highest single-season output in NCAA history.
The only unbeaten team in the country with a perfect 15-0 ledger, Cornell owns the nation's top-scoring offense by averaging 14.1 goals per game. Eric Pittard has a team-leading 61 points on 32 goals and 29 assists while David Mitchell has produced 43 goals.
Saturday's semifinal will feature two of the top goalkeepers in the nation in Duke's Dan Loftus and Cornell's Matt McMonagle. Loftus ranks third nationally in save percentage (.627) while McMonagle is second on the chart (.630). In Cornell's 7-6 victory over Duke on March 20 of this year, Loftus registered 17 saves while McMonagle was credited with 11.
