Johnson defeated Megan Russell of SMU (6-4, 5-7, 6-2) in the first round, Sarah Witten of Kentucky in the second round (6-0, 6-2), and Paola Palencia of Pepperdine (2-6, 6-2, 6-4) in the third round to advance to the main draw. The main draw will begin on Thursday and consists of the final 32 singles players. Johnson will face Nataly Cahana of Old Dominion.
In other singles action, sophomore Katie Granson (Bethlehem, Pa.) fell in the first round to Faye DeVera of Arizona State (1-6, 6-2, 0-6).
One of three Blue Devils doubles teams advanced to the main draw, as Johnson/Megan Miller defeated Branas/Perkova of UTEP (6-1, 6-1), knocked off No. 1 seed Chappell/Seymour of UC Irvine (6-1, 6-2), and defeated No. 7 seed Nedorostova/Terburgh of Texas A&M (6-2, 3-6, 6-4). The duo will take on Cahana/Radeljevic of Old Dominion on Thursday.
Duke's doubles team of Hillary Adams/Ansley Cargill won their first two matches before falling to No. 6 seed Uhlirova/Walker of Texas (3-6, 7-5, 6-2). They defeated No. 3 seed Brown/Yeats of Arizona State (7-6, (4), 6-4), in the first round and Fisher/Marinova of UCLA (6-4, 6-3) in the second round. The doubles duo of Kathy Sell/Granson fell in the first round to Hedberg/Roland of Texas A&M in a walkover.
Sell, Miller, and Cargill will begin playing in the singles main draw on Thursday. Sell will battle No. 5 seed Janet Walker of Texas, Miller (No. 8 seed) will take on Vida Mulec of Baylor, and Cargill will face No. 6 seed Chin Bee Khoo of Arkansas.
In the ITA preseason singles rankings, Miller is ranked No. 10, Sell is No. 23, Cargill is tied at No. 59, Granson is No. 79, and Johnson is No. 89.
