PACIFIC PALISADES, CALIF. Duke senior All-America Megan Miller (Palm City, Fla.) and freshman Ansley Cargill (Atlanta, Ga.) each advanced to the singles final 16 of the Riviera Women's All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif. on Thursday.
Miller defeated Vida Mulec of Baylor (7-5, 6-2) and will take on Lauren Kalvaria of Stanford on Friday. Cargill knocked off No. 9 ranked Chin Bee Khoo of Arkansas (5-7, 6-2, 6-4) and will battle No. 41 Cintia Tortorella of Pepperdine on Friday.
Two Blue Devils are playing in the consolation round after falling the main draw -- Kathy Sell will take on No. T-6 Adria Engel of Arizona State Friday, after falling to No. 8 Janet Walker of Texas. Sell has been battling the flu throughout the championships. Amanda Johnson fell to Nataly Cahana of Old Dominion (6-7, 2-6) and will take on Khoo of Arkansas Friday.
In doubles action, the duo of Miller and Amanda Johnson defeated Cahana/Radeljevic of Old Dominion 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 and will take on No. 10 ranked Kalvaria/Gabriela Lastra of Stanford on Friday.
In the ITA preseason singles rankings, Miller is ranked No. 10, Sell is No. 23, Cargill is tied at No. 59, Granson is No. 79, and Johnson is No. 89. None of Duke's current doubles teams are ranked as head coach Jamie Ashworth has moved the pairings around.
