PACIFIC PALISADES, CALIF. Duke freshman Ansley Cargill (Atlanta, Ga.) advanced to the finals of the Riviera Women's All-American Championships on Saturday, October 21 in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Cargill defeated Jahnaui Darekh of Baylor (6-1, 6-3) and Nataly Cahana of Old Dominion (6-3, 6-4) on Saturday to advance to Sunday's final against No. 1 seed Aarthi Venkatesan of Georgia.
Cargill is ranked No. T-58 in the latest Wingspanbank.com Collegiate Tennis Rankings and Venkatesan is ranked No. 2. The championship is the second leg of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Grand Slam, at the Riviera Tennis Club. Duke has had success in the tournament in the past as former Blue Devil All-America Vanessa Webb won the title in 1996.
Senior Kathy Sell advanced to the singles consolation final on Saturday after downing Lindsay Blau of Arizona (6-4, 6-2) and Janet Walker of UCLA (7-5, 6-2). She will take on Janet Bergman of Wake Forest on Sunday. Freshman Amanda Johnson advanced to the second round of the singles consolation before falling to Martina Nedelkova of Virginia Commonwealth (6-3, 6-4).
In doubles action, Duke's Megan Miller/Johnson fell in the second round to Lauren Kalvaria and Gabriela Lastra of Stanford (7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-0).
