The Duke men's and women's cross country teams both faired well at the NCAA Southeast Regional at Furman University on Saturday afternoon, as the men placed fourth out of 29 teams and the women finished fifth out of 26 squads.
Senior Sean Kelly led the way for the Blue Devil men, finishing second overall (30:21) for the second year in a row. Kelly was followed by sophomore Chris Williams (sixth, 30:35), freshman Michael Hatch (23rd, 31:10), freshman Jared Moore (24th, 31:22) and senior Jim Martin (40th, 31:48). Sean Graham of William & Mary was the overall champion in 30:15.
N.C. State was the team champion with 30 points and was followed by William & Mary (second, 72 points), Wake Forest (third, 82 points) and Duke (fourth, 86 points). The Blue Devils and Demon Deacons must wait until Monday to see if the NCAA Committee will award one or both of the teams an at-large bid. Kelly, who earned All-Southeast Region honors, will make the trip to NCAA Championships as he received an automatic bid for his performance Saturday.
The Blue Devil women were paced by freshmen Paige Miller (22:23) and Paris Edwards (22:25), who finished 24th and 25th, respectively. Rounding out the scorers for Duke were freshman Meghan Leon (26th, 22:30), senior Katie Atlas (40th, 22:50) and sophomore Heidi Hullinger (53rd, 23:12). Shalane Flanagan of North Carolina won her second straight Southeast Regional, finishing in 20:26.
N.C. State captured the women's crown with 45 points followed by North Carolina (second, 49 points), Virginia (third, 86 points), James Madison (fourth, 121 points) and Duke (fifth, 162 points).
