DURHAM, N.C. - After shaking off the rust of three weeks without dual match competition, the second-ranked Duke women's tennis team blanked the Campbell Fighting Camels, 4-0, in the first round of the 2001 NCAA Tournament at the Duke Tennis Stadium in Durham, N.C.
The Blue Devils (25-1) advance to the second round and will take on 28th-ranked Alabama on Saturday at 4:00 PM at the Duke Tennis Stadium for the right to advance to Stone Mountain, Ga. for the final 16. Alabama downed 29th-ranked Brigham Young in the first round, 4-2.
Duke got things rolling early by taking the doubles point with victories at the first and third positions. The duo of Kathy Sell and Katie Granson made quick work of Alexia Erb/Isabel Declercq winning 8-2 at the third spot, while Megan Miller and Ansley Cargill teamed to win at the first position, 8-2, over Carmen Linder/Laurence Poujoulat.
Heading into singles action with a 1-0 lead, Duke's top three positions did the work to close out their matches in just around one hour of play. Johnson, a freshman ranked 10th-nationally out of Bettendorf, Iowa, won 6-0, 6-1 over Poujoulat at number three to put the Blue Devils up 2-0. Then, Cargill posted her 40th singles win of the season with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Linder at the first slot. Cargill is currently ranked second nationally.
The senior native of Palm City, Fla, Miller closed out the match with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Stockinger to give the Blue Devils the 4-0 victory. All other singles matches were abandoned once Duke clinched the win.
Duke will host Alabama on Saturday at 4:00 PM at the Duke Tennis Stadium.
Duke Head Coach Jamie Ashworth
"One of the things we talked a little bit last night is it doesn't matter
who we are playing as a team. A short forehand is a short forehand and a
first serve is a first serve. If we play smart and disciplined then we
should win as we are more talented. If we play disciplined tennis we are as
good as anyone in the country."
Duke's Ansley Cargill
"I tried to step up from the first point today and capitalize on any short
balls I got. I knew that she [Carmen Linder] was a weaker player and her
balls were going to land short. I have been working a lot this week on
attacking short balls and with my footwork for attacking short balls."
"Since we haven't played in a while, we wanted to start out the match strong. We can take the confidence from winning this match to the next match for Alabama. If we have two good matches then we can go into Stone Mountain, Ga. feeling confident and prepared to play in the heat down there as it will be even hotter than it is here. I think the whole year we have been working under stressful situations and hopefully it will pay off at the end of the year."
Duke's Amanda Johnson
"I thought played really well in singles as I didn't give her a chance."
"These matches we try to get off the court as quickly as possible. We don't want to be out there for a long time. When three of us can put together two quick sets, it really helps our team."
Campbell Head Coach David Johnson
"I felt like we were up against Mike Tyson out there today. I knew they
[Duke] were going to come out early on in doubles and singles and really try
to take it to us for obvious reasons. Our goal early on in each of the two
was to try to extend the tie. In some instances, we were able to have some
success, but certainly not as much as we would of needed. The more balls
they [Duke] hit they more confident they get. It is like a domino effect.
Duke is so solid throughout doubles and singles."
