STONE MOUNTAIN, GA. - Duke freshman Ansley Cargill advanced to the final eight of the NCAA Individual competition with two victories on Wednesday in Stone Mountain, Ga. Senior Kathy Sell and the Blue Devils' doubles duo of Amanda Johnson/Megan Miller each lost in the final 16 on the day.
The product of Atlanta, Ga., notched consecutive victories over 65th-ranked Alida Gallovitis of Florida State (6-1, 6-0) and 20th-ranked Mirela Vladelescu of University of Alabama-Birmingham (6-1, 6-7, 7-6). Cargill, who is currently ranked second nationally, will next have to face fourth-ranked Bea Bielik of Wake Forest. The two victories for Cargill give her 45 for the season, which is the third-best single season total in Duke history.
For the first time in her career, Sell received All-America status for advancing to the final 16 of the individual competition. The native of Moorestown, N.J. knocked off seventh-ranked Whitney Laiho of Florida (6-4, 7-6), but lost 6-4, 6-4 to eighth-ranked Bruna Colosia of LSU. She concludes her career with 146 career wins, which ranks second all-time at Duke.
Duke's ninth-ranked doubles duo of Johnson/Miller concluded their stellar season on Wednesday with a 6-0, 6-3 loss to the fourth-ranked tandem of Whitney Laiho/Jessica Lehnoff of Florida.
The singles competition will take place through May 26.
