MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA. - Former Duke women's tennis standout Ansley Cargill will face second seeded Venus Williams in the first round of the Australian Open played tonight at 12:00 AM. The Australian Open's coverage on ESPN begins tonight at 11:00 PM with Cargill's match scheduled to begin at midnight (EST).
Cargill, who is currently ranked 219 in singles, defeated Alexandra Fusai of France in the first round of qualifying (6-7, 7-6, 6-3), knocked off Eva Fislova of Slovakia (6-4, 2-6, 6-4) and defeated Pavlina Nola of New Zealand (6-3, 4-6, 6-4) to advance to the main draw. In the qualifying victories for Cargill, she knocked off three players ranked higher than herself-- Nola (#133), Fusai (#141) and Fislova (#212).
The meeting with Williams will be the first of her career for Cargill. Williams is currently ranked third in the singles rankings and is the reigning back-to-back winner of the Wimbledon and U.S. Open tournaments.
Cargill, a native of Atlanta, Ga., turned professional this summer after leading Duke to a 27-2 overall record and an Elite Eight finish in the NCAA Tournament. She was selected All-America, ACC Player & Rookie of the Year, ITA National Rookie of the Year and notched 45 singles wins as a freshman.
