Blue Devils Thump Irish In Women's Tennis Action Monday

DURHAM, N.C. -- The fourth-ranked Duke women's tennis team (15-3) remained perfect against Notre Dame (11-9) on Monday as the Blue Devils cruised to a 6-1 victory over the Irish. Duke improved its series record with Notre Dame to 9-0 all time.
The Blue Devils jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead by taking both the second and third doubles positions. Duke won at the second position 8-4 behind stellar play from Amanda Johnson/Julie DeRoo over Alicia Salas/Sarah Jane Connelly, but Notre Dame's duo of Katie Cunha/Lindsey Green came back to down Hillary Adams/Kelly McCain, 8-6, to leave the doubles point in the hands of the third slot.
Notre Dame's tandem of Becky Varnum/Nina Vaughan quickly jumped out to a commanding 4-1 lead over Katie Granson/Susie Abromeit, but the Blue Devils would not give up as they roared back to win the doubles point for Duke with a 9-7 victory. The Blue Devil duo improved to 8-0 on the season.
In singles action, Duke's 18th-ranked DeRoo made quick work of 118th-ranked Vaughan, 6-1, 6-1, at the second position. The match lasted less than one hour and put the Blue Devils up 2-0. Duke then took a 3-0 lead as 39th-ranked Johnson downed 75th-ranked Varnum, 6-4, 6-3, at the number one position.
Adams, a junior native of New York, N.Y., then clinched the victory for the Blue Devils with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Connelly at No. 6. The final three matches took three sets to decide the winners as Duke's Granson defeated Cunha (3-6, 6-1, 6-1) at No. 5, Duke's Plesu downed Green (6-2, 4-6, 6-2) and Notre Dame's Salas knocked off freshman Saras Arasu (4-6, 6-1, 6-2).
The Blue Devils were forced to play without fourth-ranked McCain in singles action because she was filling sick. Duke will travel to Florida State on Wednesday for an ACC match-up with Florida State at 5:30 PM.
