NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Two-time Met PGA Women's Player of the Year Cheryl Anderson and the Futures Golf Tour's Candy Hannemann will join the field of 144 LPGA professionals to compete in the Sybase Big Apple Classic, July 22-28, 2002, at Wykagyl Country Club in New Rochelle.
"We are excited to have Cheryl and Candy in our field for the 13th annual Sybase Big Apple Classic," said Bob Schwartz, Tournament Chairman. "Both women are extremely talented athletes. We hope our fans will join us at the tournament to cheer them on as they test their skills against the world's best female golfers."
Cheryl Anderson, a professional at Metropolis Country Club in White Plains, continued building upon her successful past in 2001 by winning her second straight Metropolitan Women's Open on her way to being named the 2001 Met PGA Women's Player of the Year. In addition, Anderson was the only club professional to make the cut on the LPGA Tour last year, as she played all four rounds at the First Union Betsy King Classic.
Candy Hannemann is no stranger to success either. A member of the 1998 and 2002 NCAA National Championship teams at Duke University, Hannemann was a First-Team NCAA All-America selection and the NCAA National Player of the Year in 2001 The Rio de Janeiro, Brazil native leaves Duke as one of the winningest women's golfers in the history of the program. She concluded her Duke career with two National Championships, 33 team victories, five individual tournament victories, one NCAA Individual Championship, 23 top-10 finishes and with the top stroke average in school history of 72.88, which she had as a junior.
The Sybase Big Apple Classic attracts the top LPGA players to compete in New York City's backyard. NBC will televise the third and fourth rounds live from 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. (EST) on Saturday, July 27 and 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. (EST) on Sunday, July 28. The golfers will be playing for a purse of $950,000 with the winner taking home $142,500 in official LPGA Tour prize money.
