RALEIGH, N.C. - For the second consecutive ACC Championship match, the third-ranked Duke women's tennis team cruised to a 4-0 victory over 34th-ranked Virginia to advance to the finals of the ACC Championship at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center in Raleigh, N.C. The Blue Devils will play at 11:00 AM on Sunday against the winner of the North Carolina vs. Clemson match.
"I thought we competed well," said Duke head coach Jamie Ashworth. "I don't think we hit the ball great, but the way Virginia makes you play it is hard to hit the ball well. We had talked yesterday about making sure we competed better than Virginia did. Today we came to the court with more intensity than they did."
Duke took the doubles point as the Blue Devils won at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. The sixth-ranked tandem of Julie DeRoo and Amanda Johnson won their 25th match of the season with an 8-3 victory over 31st-ranked Kristen James and Lori Stern. Then, at the third slot Duke's 60th-ranked Katie Granson and Julia Smith won an 8-5 decision over Kyle Montgomery and Lauren Bruch. The victory for Granson/Smith is their 33rd of the year, which ranks them tied second on Duke's season record charts.
"The doubles point helped us out a lot," said Ashworth. "In an event like this momentum can carry you through a tournament."
The Blue Devils cruised through singles play starting off with 98th-ranked DeRoo finishing off Stern (6-2, 6-4) at No. 4. Then, third-ranked McCain downed 86th-ranked Henriette Williams (6-2, 6-2) at No. 1 and sophomore 60th-ranked Katie Blaszak clinched the victory with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Marta Bechliwanis. McCain's victory improves her to 30-2 this season in singles play.
Duke will be going for its 15th ACC Championship title in the last 16 years. The Blue Devils had won 14 in a row before falling to North Carolina last season, 4-3.
