LEXINGTON, KY. - The ninth-ranked Duke women's tennis team won its second straight match over a top-25 opponent on Sunday by knocking off 25th-ranked Texas A&M, 5-2, at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex in Lexington, Ky.
The Blue Devils once again jumped out to a 1-0 lead after taking the important doubles point on Sunday as Duke won at the first and third positions. Head Coach Jamie Ashworth switched the doubles lineups on Sunday as Amanda Johnson and Julia Smith played No. 1, Tory Zawacki and Jennifer Zika were at No. 2 and Saras Arasu and Kristin Cargill took the court at No. 3.
Texas A&M came out strong as the Aggies won at the second court as Roberta Spencer and Lauren Walker defeated Zawacki and Zika, 8-2. Duke responded with victories at No. 1 with an 8-6 win over 22nd-ranked Jessica Roland and Helga Vleira and at No. 3 with an, 8-3, win over Anna Lubinsky and Nicki Mechem to take the doubles point.
In singles play, Duke jumped out to a 2-0 advantage as 95th-ranked Smith downed Mechem, 6-4, 6-0, but Texas A&M went up 2-1 with a 6-1, 6-3 upset victory at the top position as 26th-ranked Roland knocked off Duke's fifth-ranked Johnson.
The Blue Devils went on to win at the third, second and fifth positions before falling at No. 6 to win the match 5-2 and improve to 3-1 on the season.
Duke's 89th-ranked Zawacki defeated Spencer, 6-2, 6-2, 64th-ranked Zika downed Vleira, 7-5, 7-6, and 91st-ranked Arasu cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win over Walker. At No. 6, Texas A&M's Lubinsky won a third-set tiebreaker, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0, over Cargill to conclude the match.
The Blue Devils will next play at Indiana on Feb. 15 10:00 a.m.
