PARIS, FRANCE- Former Duke women's tennis star Kelly McCain won three singles matches to advance to the main draw of the 2004 French Open in Paris, France. McCain, currently ranked 154 in the world in singles and 186 in doubles, will next go up against 30th-ranked Petra Mandula of Hungary on Tuesday.
It marks the first time McCain has advanced to the main draw at the French Open, which is one of four Grand Slam events on the Women's Tennis Association Tour.
In qualifying action, McCain defeated 161st-ranked Edina Gallovits of Romania (4-6, 6-3, 6-2), 137th-ranked Selima Sfar of Tunisia (7-5, 7-5) and 159th-ranked Janette Husarova of Slovakia (2-6, 6-4, 6-1).
McCain was a two-time All-America, 2003 ACC Player of the Year and 2002 ACC Rookie of the Year for the Blue Devils from 2001 through 2003. The Tampa, Fla., native led Duke to the 2003 NCAA Final Four and won the 2003 Riviera All-American singles title.
