DURHAM, N.C. ? Lamar Owens ran for 106 yards and threw for 87 as Navy defeated Duke 28-21 on Saturday afternoon at Wallace Wade Stadium. Duke falls to 1-4 on the season while Navy improves to 1-2 after a three week layoff.
Navy threatened on its opening possession, driving to the Duke five yard line. On third-and-goal from the 15, Midshipmen quarterback Lamar Owens' pass was intercepted by John Talley at the five yard line and returned out to the 38. The interception for Talley is his third of the year and the ninth of his career ? tops among active players in the ACC.
The Blue Devils went on top 7-0 with just over two minutes left in the opening quarter when tailback Justin Boyle capped a seven play, 41-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run. On the drive, Duke converted a third down-and-12 situation with a 26-yard pass from Zack Asack to Jomar Wright.
Owens' 33-yard scoring strike to Tyree Barnes on the final play of the first period knotted the game at 7-7. In the second quarter, Duke twice moved the ball inside the Navy 25 yard line, but an interception and missed field goal ended the drives.
The Mids took the kickoff to start the second half and drove for a 47-yard field goal attempt by Joey Bullen, but the kick was short. Duke responded by marching 45 yards on 10 plays for a 43-yard field goal by Joe Surgan, taking a 10-7 advantage with 7:58 left in the third quarter.
Navy claimed a 14-10 lead at the 5:17 mark of the third period when Karlos Whittaker scored on a five-yard run to end an eight play, 85-yard drive. Following a Blue Devil punt, Navy's Matt Hall darted 47 yards for a touchdown, increasing the margin to 21-10. Duke capitalized on a Navy turnover when Brendan Dewan's fumble recovery at the Midshipman 15 yard line led to a 40-yard field goal by Surgan, cutting the lead to 21-13 with 14:12 left in the fourth quarter.
Asack marched the Blue Devils 66 yards in 17 plays, and scored on a six-yard run with 3:20 left in the game. His two-point toss to Eron Riley knotted the game at 21-21.

Mike Schneider came in to quarterback the last drive for Duke and completed a pass to Ben Patrick on fourth-and-four for a first down and then from midfield, hit Adams on a 26 yard strike with less than 10 seconds left. Schneider's last pass attempt to Adams was broken up by a Navy defender.
