DURHAM, N.C. - Georgia Tech scored touchdowns on four consecutive drives in the third quarter in a span of six minutes en route to a 35-10 win over Duke Saturday here at Wallace Wade Stadium. The Blue Devils held a 10-7 halftime lead.
Georgia Tech got on the scoreboard first when quarterback Reggie Ball threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver James Johnson with 4:47 remaining in the opening quarter. The scoring strike concluded an eight play, 47-yard drive that took 3:24 off the clock.
After Duke defensive tackle Casey Camero forced and recovered a Yellow Jacket fumble, the Blue Devils marched 55 yards on four plays to knot the game at 7-7 when quarterback Zack Asack found tight end Andy Roland open in the end zone for a three-yard scoring toss with 6:53 left in the second period. The drive was highlighted by tailback Ronnie Drummer's 50-yard run to the Georgia Tech five yard line.
The Blue Devils took advantage of a Georgia Tech miscue to claim a 10-7 advantage on Joe Surgan's 22-yard field goal at the 2:19 mark of the second quarter. Facing a fourth down and 10, Duke punted but the Yellow Jackets were whistled for a personal foul on the play. Keeping possession, Asack engineered the nine play, 63-yard scoring drive that included a 38-yard pass to wide receiver Eron Riley.
The Yellow Jackets forced Duke to punt on the Blue Devils' first possession of the third quarter, and Georgia Tech then drove 43 yards in six plays to take a 14-10 lead on Ball's one-yard plunge. Duke's defense posted a goalline stand to take possession at the one yard line, but the Blue Devils fumbled the ball back to Georgia Tech on their first play from scrimmage. The Yellow Jackets capitalized on Tashard Choice's one-yard touchdown run, pushing the Georgia Tech lead to 21-10 with 8:50 remaining in the third quarter.
Georgia Tech's third takeaway of the third quarter produced a touchdown when Darrell Robertson intercepted a pass and returned it 28 yards for a score, giving the Yellow Jackets a 28-10 lead at the 7:46 mark of the period. Choice's second touchdown run of the day, also from one yard out, increased the margin to 35-10 with 4:39 left in the third quarter.
Duke junior cornerback John Talley secured his team-leading fourth interception of the season, picking off a Ball throw in the first quarter. Talley leads all active players in the ACC with 10 career interceptions.
