Wake Forest's Chris Barclay rushed 18 times for 204 yards and two touchdowns to lead the visiting Demon Deacons to a 44-6 win over Duke at Wallace Wade Stadium.
The Demon Deacons improve to 4-5 overall and 3-3 in ACC play while the Blue Devils fall to 1-8 overall and 0-6 in league action.
Wake Forest claimed an early 7-0 advantage when running back Micah Andrews scored from six yards out with just over five minutes gone in the opening quarter. The three play, 80-yard drive was keyed by a 68-yard dash by Barclay. Sam Swank's 45-yard field goal capped a nine play, 35-yard drive and pushed the Demon Deacon lead to 10-0 at the 13:13 mark of the second period.
Swank booted a 38-yard field goal with 7:21 left in the second quarter for a 13-0 Wake Forest advantage. The Demon Deacons drove 65 yards in nine plays to set up the kick.
Wake Forest's Josh Gattis intercepted a pass and returned it 22 yards to the Duke seven yard line. Two plays later, quarterback Benjamin Mauk scored on the ground from six yards out for a 20-0 score at the 4:20 mark of the second period.
The Blue Devils got on the scoreboard with 2:25 left in the half when quarterback Zack Asack hooked up with wide receiver Eron Riley for a 19-yard touchdown pass. The scoring toss came on third down and goal for Duke, and marked Riley's first career touchdown. Earlier in the six play, 69-yard drive, Riley hauled in a 37-yard reception from Asack. On the ensuing possession, Wake Forest drove to the Duke 23 yard line, but Blue Devil safety Brian Greene thwarted the scoring opportunity with his second interception of the season.
Barclay, who became Wake Forest's all-time leading rusher and scorer on the afternoon, scored on a nine-yard run to cap a nine play, 65-yard drive with 8:41 remaining in the third quarter, giving the Demon Deacons a 27-6 lead. Swank's third field goal of the day, a 27-yarder with under a minute left in the third period, increased the lead to 37-6. With 11:15 remaining in the final quarter, De'Angelo Bryant found the end zone on the ground from nine yards out for a 44-6 margin.
Duke takes to the road next Saturday with a game at Clemson. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in Death Valley. Wake Forest remains on the road, traveling to meet Georgia Tech at 1:30 p.m.
