Tulsa, Okla. - Joey Atas and Jonathan Stokke improved to 6-0 on the season as a doubles team with another victory Wednesday in the qualifying rounds of the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships. With the win the pair advances to the main draw which will begin on Thursday.
Atas and Stokke combined to win the Southern Intercollegiate doubles championship to start the fall season with four straight victories. They received a bye in the first round of this tournament and then defeated Ohio State's Bryan Koniecko and Devin Mullings, 8-5, to advance to the final round of qualifiers. The Blue Devils duo faced San Diego State's Markus Dickhardt and Christian Groh today and moved on with an 8-4 victory.
Stokke was unable to advance in singles competition, however. Stokke defeated Di Cesare in the second round of the Southern Intercollegiates, 6-2, 6-2, but could not equal the task this time around. Stokke is now 4-2 in singles play this season.
Di Cesare also helped eliminate a Duke doubles team today. He teamed up with Bram ten Berge in an 8-6 victory over Ludovic Walter and Peter Rodrigues.
Walter and Atas will begin singles play on Thursday. They both were selections for the main draw. Walter was ranked second in the preseason ITA rankings while Atas received a ranking of 27th. Walter will face Mark Barry of Penn State in his first match of the tournament on Thursday. Barry, a sophomore from Charles, Illinois, was ranked 36th by the ITA in the preseason rankings.
