Emily Waner had to sit out the 2004-05 season due to NCAA regulations after transferring from the University of Colorado. Waner, a product of Highlands Ranch, Colo., will be a sophomore for the Blue Devils this season and will play in her first game since March of 2004 on Wednesday night as Duke will host EA Sports at 7:00 p.m. She is joined this season by her sister Abby, who is a freshman for the Blue Devils. Emily sat down with GoDuke.com to talk about playing tonight.
GoDuke.com: How excited are you to play in the game on Wednesday after not playing in a game since your freshman year at Colorado?
Waner: I am so excited because I haven't played since two March's ago. It is kind of like a new feeling all over again. It has been a while.
GoDuke.com: Will you be nervous going out there on Wednesday?
Waner: I am already a little bit anxious right now, but I think nerves are good. I usually get nervous before games, but when I step on the court and start playing it goes away.
GoDuke.com: What did you learn sitting out last year?
Waner: I think I got a good feel and understanding of the ACC and the way Duke plays?the up-tempo and excellent athleticism. So I worked a lot on getting quicker. I think playing against Duke every day in practice-- that is the best competition I can have.
GoDuke.com: Did you learn anything different sitting next to the coaches on the bench?
Waner: I say I have a better feel for the x's and o's and what they are looking for from a coach's perspective.
GoDuke.com: How nice is it to have your sister in Durham now?
Waner: It is so nice. She can read me like a book. If I need picking up or I can tell she needs picking up?it is like a whole other comfort level.
GoDuke.com: Have ya'll played one-on-one any since she has arrived and if so who won?
Waner: No we haven't played any one-on-one. We try to stay away from that.
GoDuke.com: How has practice been going?
Waner: I think we are still searching for some team chemistry and putting it all together. I think we are ready to start testing it on other people and to pull together as a team and go against someone else instead of going against each other every day.
GoDuke.com: Have you learned a lot from Lindsey Harding about playing the point guard position at Duke and what Coach G expects?
Waner: I think Lindsey is a phenomenal player and I am going to reach my potential personally because I get to go against her every day in practice. She is a great defender and I think she is a solid leader. She is very smart and knows the game. Lindsey is very good about talking with me and communicating with me on what to do. I respect her a lot.
GoDuke.com: Do you have any pregame rituals?
Waner: I was trying to think about that. I just try to get some good shooting in, lay low, rest and take a nap. I like to visualize what I want to do in a game and what we are looking for?know what the coaches are expecting and about the opponent we are facing.
GoDuke.com: Will your family be coming this way from Colorado for a lot of games this year?
Waner: Yea, they will be here for Thanksgiving. They will be out a lot I think and more than they even know. They will be out for the Tennessee, North Carolina and other big games.
