Durham, N.C. - #7 St. John's scored four goals in the second half to knock off #2 Duke, 4-1, in the Duke/adidas Classic at Koskinen Stadium on Sunday afternoon. N.C. State won the tournament with a 3-1 victory over the College of Charleston in the first game of the day.
The Blue Devils struck first in their game against the Red Storm.
Michael Videira and
Mike Grella had a give-and-go play that set up Videira for an open shot on goal. Videira pounded it in from 15 yards out to give Duke a 1-0 lead. They have scored first in all four of their games this season.
Duke carried the lead into halftime, but St. John's would storm back after the break. Matt Groenwald tied the score in the 58th minute with a hard shot from 20 yards out. The Red Storm would go on to strike three times in the final 20 minutes. At the 71:44 mark, Garry Lewis gave them the lead with a shot from the right of the goal that found its way into the opposite corner. It was the first time the Blue Devils trailed in a game this season. Three minutes later, Jeff Carroll sent a long pass in to the Duke zone and
Justin Papadakis, the Blue Devils' sophomore goalkeeper, came out to get it, but Sebastian Alvarado-Ralph beat him to the ball and sent it over his head for the goal. Tony Beltran tacked on one more goal in the 83rd minute to make the final score, 4-1.
Alvarado-Ralph finished the game with one goal and three assists while Groenwald had a goal and an assist as well. The two were named to the All-Tournament team along with Lewis who tallied the game-winning goal. Jason Landers improved to 2-1-1 on the year with four saves in the game.
Papadakis made three saves and suffered his first career loss in six starts. Videira's goal was his second of the season. Grella picked up his second assist of the year. Duke also had two players named to the All-Tournament team.
Kyle Helton earned a spot with two assists in the Blue Devils' 3-2 overtime win against the College of Charleston.
Spencer Wadsworth scored the game-winning goal in that game to also earn a spot on the team.
N.C. State defeated the College of Charleston, 3-1, in the first game of the day to earn the Tournament Championship with a 2-0 record. They also defeated St. John's on Friday with the game-winning goal coming with just five seconds left on the clock. In today's game, El Hadj Cisse gave them the lead 15 minutes in to the game, scoring off a pass from John Queeley and Bryant Salter. The Cougars tied the score at the 27:01 mark. Jeremy Gold was fouled inside the box setting up a penalty kick. His shot was saved by Jorge Gonzalez but he was able to put in the rebound. The Wolfpack answered in the 64th minute. Courgars defenseman John Bello received a red card and on the free kick, Queeley sent the ball past Charleston's goalkeeper, Corbin Waller, to regain the lead. The Cougars had to play a man down the rest of the way and N.C. State was too much offensively. Aaron King sealed the victory in the 78th minute, with a header in to the net off a cross by Santiago Fusilier.
Salter had two assists in the game and three in the tournament to garner Tournament MVP honors. King scored two goals to also earn a spot on the All-Tournament team. The Wolfpack also placed Queeley and Rami Ghanayem on the tournament squad. The College of Charleston had Gold and Wes Knight earn All-Tournament honors.
