Athens, Ga. - Joey Atas and Jonathan Stokke won the doubles championship at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga. on Monday with an 8-6 victory in the final round.
Atas and Stokke start the season 5-0 after wins in the semifinals and finals today. They started the day with a 9-7 victory over Sam Chang and Jonathas Sucupira to advance to the championship match. They then faced Georgia Tech's Scott Blackmon and Zach Rath who advanced with a 9-8 win.
"We got some really good advice from our assistant coach, Ramsey Smith," said Stokke. "He watched these guys play in the past and helped us get out to an early 2-0 lead in the match. I thought we played well for our first time competing together other than a couple of times in practice."
The Georgia Tech duo battled back and took a 5-4 lead with a couple of break points, but Duke would not back down coming up big in the stretch with some close wins to make it 6-5 and even it up at 6-6. They then closed out the match with two straight victories for the 8-6 win.
"We needed a little time to get used to each other," said Atas. "The win gives us a lot of confidence going into the ITA All-American Tournament where we really hope to do well."
Duke will return to the courts on Oct. 6 when they head to Tulsa, Okla. for the four-day ITA All-American Tournament.
