NOTRE DAME, IND. -- The Duke men's cross country team ran to an eighth place finish amid some of the nation's top programs Friday at the 50th annual Notre Dame Invitational. No. 7 Arizona claimed the title, upsetting top-ranked Wisconsin, who finished fifth and No. 6 Notre Dame, who came in second in the field of 25 teams. Eighteenth-ranked Florida State finished fourth, but Duke defeated three other ACC schools ? Wake Forest (17th), Miami (24th) and Georgia Tech (25th).
Junior Keith Krieger led the Blue Devils, finishing the 8K race in 24:30 and 30th place. Krieger knocked over 30 seconds off his 25:02 8K time from Lou Onesty. Sophomore Chris Spooner and junior Dan Daly were less than half a minute behind their teammate, coming in 52nd and 53rd, respectively, with times of 24:53 and 24:54. Both were running their first race of the 2005 season.
Rounding out the Blue Devil top five were freshman Devin McDaniel, in 74th place with a time of 25:15 and junior Alex Romero, who ran a 25:22 to garner 86th place and the team's final scoring position.
